Booking sites in Bodrum use three different names for what looks like the same day out: sea tour, bay tour, island tour. All three take place on a boat and all three include swimming, yet they do not promise the same thing. Here is what each term actually covers and what to check before you pay.
What the three terms mean
Sea tour
The widest label of the three: a boat leaves a pier and spends the day on the water. Route, duration and content change from one operator to the next, so the phrase says nothing about how many stops you get. Read the timetable and the stop names instead.
Bay tour
This one signals a route along sheltered bays near the coastline rather than open water, with a swim stop at each one. If you want a sense of how many stops fit into a single day, the piece where we count them one by one is more useful than the label.
Island tour
At least one stop is an island or an island strait. Bodrum has plenty of islands and no single boat visits them all. Note that "island tour" rarely means stepping ashore; usually the boat anchors nearby and you swim straight off the deck.
Skip the label, check these instead
Naming is a marketing choice, while the real information sits in the details. Get clear answers on five points before booking:
- Departure pier and departure time
- Names of the stops and time spent at each
- Whether lunch is part of the price
- Whether drinks are charged separately
- Whether hotel transfer is included
Where our day fits in
Our trip sits where all three descriptions overlap. We leave Gümbet Harbour at 10:30 and come back to the same pier at 17:00. The route is fixed: Dalgıç Bay, Ada Boğazı, Aşıklar Bay and Akvaryum Bay, with 30-40 minutes at every stop. Lunch is chicken, pasta and salad, included in the price and served at Ada Boğazı. Drinks are not included and are bought at the deck bar. The ticket is 1,500 TL per person, free for ages 0-6 and half price for 6-12. Transfer from hotels in Gümbet, Bitez and Ortakent is covered.
The part no label describes
Two boats can run the same route and feel nothing alike. On ours the morning stays at background volume, then the DJ set and dance animations lift the pace after lunch.
